Severe Heatwave Claims Two Lives in Italy

(MENAFN) Italy is being struck by a brutal wave of extreme weather, with deadly flooding and intense heatwaves claiming two lives and sparking urgent weather warnings, according to local reports on Tuesday.

In the northwestern Piedmont region, a 70-year-old man tragically lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters and mud from the overflowing Frejus stream in the mountain town of Bardonecchia. Media reported that emergency teams later recovered his body.

Meanwhile, in Emilia-Romagna, a 47-year-old construction worker died from what is believed to be heat-related illness while working on a site in Bologna amidst soaring temperatures.

In response to the escalating conditions, authorities have issued yellow-level storm warnings across Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, and Veneto. A red heat alert — the highest level of severity — is now active in 18 cities, including Campobasso.

As the crisis deepens in Bardonecchia, the town’s mayor declared a state of maximum alert, urging residents to stay indoors. A local sports hall has been repurposed to shelter up to 150 children from summer camps and others displaced by the flooding. Several roads, including the A32 Torino–Bardonecchia motorway, were closed, while emergency responders scrambled to clear debris and stabilize the area.

To the north, in the Aosta Valley, three landslides have severed access to the town of Cogne, which had already endured a nearly month-long isolation last year due to similar flooding. Though crews temporarily restored access to the main road, full recovery is not expected until at least Tuesday.

In Belluno province, a violent storm triggered a rockslide on Mount Marcora, dumping dust on the nearby town of San Vito di Cadore. Authorities confirmed that there were no injuries or major damages from the incident.
